{"id":71,"date":"2010-09-26T21:36:55","date_gmt":"2010-09-27T02:36:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.admissions.uiowa.edu\/aaron\/?p=71"},"modified":"2010-09-26T21:36:55","modified_gmt":"2010-09-27T02:36:55","slug":"everythings-different-in-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.admissions.uiowa.edu\/aaron\/2010\/09\/everythings-different-in-texas\/","title":{"rendered":"Everything&#8217;s&#8230;different? in Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve very familiar with the phrase, &#8220;Everything&#8217;s Bigger in Texas.&#8221;\u00a0 During my stay here, I haven&#8217;t noticed anything being much bigger (not even the steak I ordered Sunday night), but I have noticed some differences.\u00a0 Here are some notable differences from Iowa:<\/p>\n<p><strong>-U-Turn lanes.<\/strong> Once off an interstate, Texas provides you a convienent opportunity to make an uninterrupted U-Turn.\u00a0 I found this out when attempting to turn left on the first day here, and found myself going back the way I came.\u00a0 See an example from my friend Wikipedia here: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Texas_U-turn\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Texas_U-turn<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>-Highway lines:<\/strong> While we&#8217;re talking about the highway system, lets talk about the lines on the highways.\u00a0 In Iowa they&#8217;re painted on with reflective paint.\u00a0 Here, the lines are painted, however they also have raised, reflective, round(or rectangle)\u00a0markers on the painted lines.\u00a0 These make a very interesting noise when driving over them.\u00a0 I found myself doing this on occasion, just for fun.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Whataburger: <\/strong>I&#8217;m accustomed to Micky D&#8217;s (McDonald&#8217;s), Wendy&#8217;s, Burger King, Hardee&#8217;s (love their commercials. ex: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=J73cdISF8wk\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=J73cdISF8wk<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>BBQ &#8211; <\/strong>while on the topic of food (which I love), there are more BBQ\u00a0restaurants\u00a0here. \u00a0At these\u00a0restaurants, it&#8217;s more of a buffet line than a regular order\/sit-down\u00a0restaurant. \u00a0This is kind of nice. \u00a0I ended up sitting with two older(I called them young) men who had waited in line for TCU tickets. \u00a0We had a great conversation about college football and a better lunch. \u00a0The sliced BBQ beef at <em>Angelo&#8217;s<\/em> was great(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.angelosbbq.com\/\">http:\/\/www.angelosbbq.com\/<\/a>)!<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Gas stations: <\/strong>In Iowa we have gas stations like BP, Kum &amp; Go, and Casey&#8217;s, but in TX they have Mobile 1, Valero, and Chevron. \u00a0Gas is gas, but nothing beats Casey&#8217;s donuts and pizza! \u00a0Haven&#8217;t had it? It&#8217;s a must-try!<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Heat: <\/strong>It&#8217;s been Hot! for September? \u00a0I like the seasons of Iowa, and nothing screams football like the fall weather! \u00a0I made the mistake of renting a black car. \u00a0In Iowa, WI, and IL I can sit in my car and read if I make it to a high school early, but in TX?! \u00a0I&#8217;d have to leave the car running to keep cool. \u00a0I&#8217;m also a fan of the colors we have during the change in seasons.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, I had a great time in TX. \u00a0I hope to return again.
