The Comeback of Slime, Squishies, and Nostalgia

If you’ve been on social media lately, you may have seen the trend of people saying that 2026 is the new 2016. From fashion trends to old internet challenges, it seems like everyone is feeling a little nostalgic. But one comeback I wasn’t expecting? Slime and squishies!

I remember when slime videos and squishy collections were everywhere. Whether it was making slime at home, watching people mix different textures, or collecting the latest squishy toys, these were such a big part of growing up in the 2010s. Now, almost ten years later, I find myself getting excited about them all over again at the grown age of 20!

Recently, I’ve noticed myself getting back into NeeDohs, slime, and other little sensory toys. There’s just something so satisfying about them, especially when I need a quick break from studying or want something to keep my hands busy. Collecting all the different styles and colors is also super fun!

That brings me to a little discovery right here in Iowa City: BLICK Art Materials!

I recently stopped by BLICK after hearing about a restock of NeeDohs, and while I was there, I realized they had so much more than just art supplies. Along with the squishies, I found slime, mini craft kits, small games, and even Smiskis, which have become super popular among a lot of my friends.

I think one of my favorite things about this comeback is that it’s not necessarily about needing something new or expensive. Sometimes it’s just fun to pick up a little craft, find a cute collectible, or play with something that reminds you of being younger. It genuinely makes my day just discovering a new squishy or slime, which seems silly when you think about it.

As a college student, I feel like it’s easy to get caught up in exams, assignments, work, and everything else going on. Having little hobbies and finding small things that bring you joy can make those busy weeks a little more enjoyable. Whether it’s making slime, collecting Smiskis, or finding the perfect NeeDoh, it’s a fun way to reconnect with something you used to love.

Another bonus? BLICK offers student discounts! As a college student, I am always looking for ways to save a little money, so even if I am only saving a little bit, it is definitely nice.

So, is 2026 really becoming 2016 again? Maybe not completely, but if it means bringing back some of the fun, colorful, and slightly random things I loved growing up, I’m all for it.

That’s all for now!
-Jordan

If you’ve been on social media lately, you may have seen the trend of people saying that 2026 is the new 2016.
