Jimmy ate my potato chips.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Yesterday was fun. I showed Zach and Jimmy my drawing of them, which resembled The Scream<\/em> and featured Zach screaming as Jimmy ate my potato chips.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Jimmy ate potato chips and watched\u2019,\u201d Zach said. \u201cThat\u2019s so accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n

We laughed and talked about the Readings for Writers session they missed. I went with four girls to the Iowa Review\u2019s presentation at Prairie Lights. On the way there, we passed a car that read: \u201cThe greatest lie ever told is that vaccines are safe and effective\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat bothers me,\u201d I said to Kristin.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat car back there?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. I mean, do you know how many lives vaccines have saved? Just because you see it on Oprah doesn\u2019t make it true.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed. We discussed healthcare.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I knew more about healthcare,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m a little fuzzy on the details, so I can\u2019t really form a good opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI like how you look at both sides of the argument before you pick one. Most people just pick a side and stick with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks, but growing up where I did, I kind of had to.\u201d<\/p>\n

We talked until we reached Prairie Lights\u2014a bookstore famous for its quantity of novels and home to a coffee shop that sells a mean cookie\u2014where we looked at the books displayed throughout the store.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to read that,\u201d I said, pointing at The Anatomy of an Epidemic<\/em>. \u201cI heard it\u2019s good. It\u2019s about why kids are so screwed up these days. The author thinks it\u2019s because of overdiagnosis and a lack of discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cInteresting.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the reading (which was decent), we headed home.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what do you write?\u201d Skylar asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cMostly fiction\u2014short story and novel,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was just offered a book deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s exciting. From who?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s an actual book deal. It\u2019s from this Serbian publisher I\u2019ve never heard of.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re not sure, don\u2019t take it. Did you check out that Inkpop thing I told you about? They\u2019re pretty legit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inkpop is a website where people submit young-adult targeted books. Every month, the five most popular manuscripts are reviewed by Harper Collins editors.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I think I might do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCool.\u201d<\/p>\n

We entered the dorms and split.<\/p>\n

I slept like a rock.<\/p>\n

It was a good night.<\/p>\n

(On another note, I think I\u2019ll read Delivering Happiness<\/em> when I have time. I\u2019ve been a little busy, but I always make time for a good book.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
