ON IOWA! GO HAWKS!

category icon Posted in General

As I’ve probably stated before in this blog, college quickly teaches you that you physically cannot do everything. However if you’re anything like me you don’t see college as an overwhelming place of people, but rather a place with hundreds of fun and enticing organizations you can join! Clubs and organizations on campus are a great way to meet people with similar interests and find new experiences to get involved with. Although I could make entire list about great organizations on campus, I am particularly proud to be a part of a newer organization on campus, On Iowa!

Created about 4 years ago, the On Iowa! program serves to transition new students into the sometimes-overwhelming-college-experience. This week long program assists students with move-in, introduces them to Iowa’s tools for college success, and provides multiple days full of fun activities. As an On Iowa! Captain for this upcoming year, I am working hard to recruit for our 2014 team. I deeply believe in the success of this program and can see the immense amount of progress it has made just within the past few years. If you are a student currently enrolled at the University of Iowa and are interested in applying to be a leader, applications are due this Thursday! You can apply at the On Iowa! website. If you are an incoming student get excited for this amazing program and hopefully a wonderful first week at college this Fall! See you then!

We’ll Give You A Makeover

category icon Posted in General

Hello everyone!

As you can tell due to my lack of posts in this blog, I am often quite busy! The University of Iowa is a great place to get involved and there really is something for everyone.

In case you wanted to get to see what a wonderful place of Fine Arts the Iowa City area truly is, come down to see Iowa Partnership in the Arts: Makeover! Presented through the University of Iowa Theatre Department, “the Iowa Partnership in the Arts Program was established to support the creation of major new works of theatrical art. Nationally and internationally respected guest artists collaborate with students and faculty to present adventuresome new works, many of which have gone on to be productions throughout the country. ”

About Makeover:

“Abandoned after World War II, a feisty mom parleys her gift for glamour and gab into an empire catering to the dreams of women across the country. Told with insight and humor, and freely inspired by the lives of pioneer entrepreneurs Estée Lauder and Mary Kay, this new musical reflects a changing vision of women in our times. Makeover, with book and lyrics by Darrah Cloud and an original score by Kim Sherman, spans the styles that shaped popular music for 50 years – including boogie woogie, be-bop, rock and roll, disco, and more.”

The Imaginary Invalid

category icon Posted in General

One of my primary reasons for attending the University of Iowa was the clear presence and appreciation for the arts. There are live readings every week at Prairie Lights books store, numerous music concerts in downtown restaurants, and much more! As a Theatre & Art major, I love to explore the events and festivities Iowa City has to offer.

So now it is time for my self promotion! If you are looking for a fun, comedic night of the theatre, come see me in a new adaption of Moliere’s The Imaginary Invalid!

“An aging hypochondriac with a miserly streak, Argan decides the key to solving his medical needs is to marry off his daughter to a doctor. Unfortunately for him, his gold-digging wife, his wise-cracking maid, and his daughter have other ideas. A fun, fresh take on Moliere’s most often produced comedy; this new adaptation takes a close look at the medical industry, the source of many of Argan’s ills. With comic disguises, feigned deaths, an improvised opera, and Moliere’s brilliant wit, The Imaginary Invalid could be just what the doctor ordered for a fun evening in the theatre.”

Performances are on November 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23 at 8:00 p.m and November 20 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available through the Hancher Box Office by calling 319.335.1160 or 1.800.HANCHER or online by visiting www.hancher.uiowa.edu/tickets.

Hope to see you there!

Back in Black (And Gold)

category icon Posted in General

header2013_2Well hey everyone. It’s been awhile. About a month actually. (My B)

The beginning of the school year is always quite hectic as everyone tries to settle back into the swing of things. My lack of postings has been due to my involvement with my fraternity in Homecoming 2013! Every year Iowa puts on a week long celebration for Homecoming that includes various events, a parade, and ultimately a football game. Additionally all the Greek organizations participate in a competition to see which pairing of a  sorority and fraternity can earn the most points by participating in the most Homecoming events. However after a few long weeks of preparing, rehearsing, a bit of organized chaos, and a whole lot of cheering, Homecoming 2013 has officially come to a close. My fraternity (Delta Upsilon), paired with Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Kappa Phi, received fourth place overall in the competition and may I say we were quite happy. Although fourth place is never really a desired position to be in, we take what we can get! (In case you’re just tuning into the blog now, know my fraternity is returning back to campus, we’ve only been here for 2 years, and so we’re still figuring out how to build this organization that one calls a fraternity). Nevertheless, Homecoming was a fun thing to a be a part of and definitely a great way to get involved on campus.

Up next week on Ari’s Blog: Imaginary Invalid – A UI Production!

Thursday Is The New Friday

category icon Posted in General

Creating your schedule for the semester is usually one of the most stressful times of the year. Attempting to find a way to jam in all the classes you need and still leave room for a social life, is a challenge every college student faces. However, know this is possible!

For the second time in my college career, I have managed to have no classes on Fridays. Although my Fridays are usually quite unproductive and filled with Netflix and unhealthy snacks, I’m not complaining.  My classes are a bit more packed on the other days of the week but it’s worth the feeling of a much longer weekends (especially when we have a monday off!).

Unfortunately there is no special secret I use to create this 4-Day-Week Schedule. Both times it has just happened to work out with my first few classes and then by the time I’m placing my last class I realize I’m in the clear. So, the moral of the story is if it works out, great! If not, you will survive and are amongst the majority!

Find a schedule that works for you and you will succeed! Everyone operates differently and therefore everyone’s schedule will be different! Although scheduling is not always the easiest thing to do, know that everyone is in the same boat and you will make it through!

Oh The Places You’ll Go

category icon Posted in General

Attending a Big Ten University means that you are walking around a very big campus. Although Iowa has one of the smallest campuses within the Big Ten, there are still lots of places to explore! Here are some of my favorites:

Currier Fitness Center

If you’re looking for a place to workout and you live in the East Side Dorms, but don’t want to trek all the way over to the main Rec Center, The Currier Fitness Center is a great place to work out. They have a variety of cardio and weight machines so you can find the best workout for you. Additionally, it is usually pretty low traffic, so don’t be afraid to try something new!

*Note: If you don’t live in the dorms, there is a hidden fitness center behind Halsey Hall in the alleyway next to the IMU Parking Garage. Can you find it?

Art Building West Library

The library on the second floor of Art Building West is one of the quietest places you’ll find on campus. Overlooking the pond below, this library is a great place for some hardcore studying. And maybe even a nap here and there 🙂

The Learning Commons (Newly Renovated)

I have  a strong belief that a University’s main library is the heart of a campus. It’s packed with endless information, the library serves as a place for studying, research, and much more. However, with the newly renovated Learning Commons, Iowa’s library allows for so much more. With reservable group study rooms, a cafe, and hundreds of computers, The Learning Commons is a fantastic way to get work done. Most of the walls can be written on and the chairs are stunning. Find a time soon to stop in and check check it out before everyone else!

Studio Arts

Relocated after the 2008 flood, Studio Arts is one of the farthest buildings away from main campus. However with an easy 10 minute ride from your friendly Cambus driver, you’ll be there in a flash! Filled with rooms of art, computers, and creativity, Studio Arts is a great place to find inspiration!

There are hundreds of places on campus for you to explore during your time here at Iowa! Take advantage of the large campus and make it yours! Comment below with YOUR favorite spots and see if you can find something new!
