Home is where the heart is..

Sunday, October 27th, 2013

This weekend I came home for the first time since I started college. For the most part, it was nice to see everyone. I did miss the freedom I have being in Iowa City, and the fact that I actually get to act like an adult there. I have a bunch of younger brothers so my family and I went to a pumpkin patch for the day (I froze to death!). I also went to the Heart of Darkness haunted house last night… unfortunately, it wasn’t nearly as scary as I had heard. I loved being able to see everyone again but let’s just say I missed the college life! Although I now have to do a bunch of homework I didn’t get done over the weekend 🙁

Okay, okay. I am officially the WORST blogger ever…but have you seen my to do list every day!? It’s insane (maybe I’m just trying to do too much at once), and I just found out that I was accepted into a volunteer program I applied to last week. Trying to balance sleep, school, and friends is hard… even though I know which is most important, it’s still difficult to tell my friends I can’t go out because I have homework. Current goal: find out which library is the least crowded. Everyone “discovered” the Main Library as soon as midterms started showing up! Anywho, it’s midnight and I have class right away in the morning so I should probably get some rest!

PS. If anyone wants to donate $88.46 to Dance Marathon that just happens to be exactly the amount I have left to raise wink wink

If you wanna know crazy..

This past week and a half has been jam packed. I LOVED it. Starting last Saturday, I went canning for Dance Marathon before the football game and raised $191 in addition to what everyone else raised.

Then, on Tuesday, my roommate and I went and got the tattoos we’d been wanting. It was my first and I absolutely adore it.

The following day, the Victoria’s Secret Pink campus reps held a little party at Hubbard Park with a bouncy house, giveaways, and the cutest pink van I have EVER seen. 1379463_10202229317480471_200447688_n

Continuing with Friday, my roommate and I began our own business making and selling pocket sweatshirts and bows. So far we’ve made over a hundred dollars and hopefully this will keep up!

Also, this weekend, my boyfriend and I celebrated our one year anniversary together. Let’s just say he spoiled me rotten 🙂

Hey!

I officially moved in 4 weeks ago..and my roommate and I are still decorating our room. Crazy, right? In the past week we have added a makeup station, began covering the wall behind our futon in pictures and quotes, and got our TV set up!

Achieving the cutest room on campus isn’t easy, let me tell you. On Sunday night alone we had to corral two boys into (attempting) to help us. At this point we were trying to cut a hole in our carpet so we could wire the tv underneath of it. This is the same carpet that was underneath the leg of Danielle’s very heavy bed. It began with the two of us trying to use scissors..

..Which did not work out. We then went and got our friend Estevan, who thought using a butter knife would somehow be more productive. Once again, it did not work out.

Attempt #2

Attempt #2

We gave up on him and went back to the scissors…And got it to work!
Until we realized the carpet was under the leg of her bed and we needed to lift it up. That’s where boy #2 came into play. He held the bed up while we pulled the carpet out from underneath of it. (CARPET IS HEAVY AND YOU WILL GET WAR MARKS). Butttttt…Our tv area is set up!

We then set up our makeup station by the window (utilize this space, space is precious!)

Never Forgotten

Wednesday, September 11th, 2013

Hey!

I have just two quick things to say:

  1. Today is 9/11.. Why is the minute of silence not done anymore? In my four years of high school we didn’t do it and it wasn’t done in my class today either. We are STILL AT WAR.. It’s a sign of respect for those still overseas. I can see not doing it after the war has ended and our troops are back home. However, with our men and women still overseas, we should be honoring them on the day this war started.
  2. Yesterday was National Suicide Prevention Awareness Day. I supported it by wearing the color yellow, which is the color symbolizing suicide, and writing the word “love” on my wrist. That may not be much, but those who are considering suicide and see it may rethink their plans because they can physically see that someone cares.

I seem to have found my voice since coming to college and now and have no issue stating my beliefs and standing up for what I believe in!

If You Want the Kitchen to Love You..

Friday, August 30th, 2013

I recently started working in the Hillcrest Dining Room (by recently I mean I got off work about 2 hours ago) clearing the dishes people send back when they’re done eating. I don’t even know who some of these people are but I already hate them – how hard is it to send your stuff back the right way!? Which led me to this: a list of tips for those of you who are considerate and kindhearted and just want the workers to love you.

  • If you have syrup (or anything else sticky, such as peanut butter) on your plate, do NOT stack your other dishes on it! I have to pull it apart and I end up getting covered in your syrup. On the same note, don’t put you empty cup in a bowl full of syrup (this actually happened).
  • Throw your silverware in the silverware slots! I know that I’ve forgotten a time or two but a huge group put all of their stuff in at once and not one of them took care of their silverware. It’s right there and it makes our job go a lot more smoothly.
  • Don’t stack your cups if they have drinks or ice left in them. I have to unstack them when they come back either way, but it makes it a bit more difficult to takecare of everything efficiently if I have to keep stopping to unstack cups.
  • Why are you throwing away unopened bananas or unpeeled apples!? We can’t use them again so you’re literally throwing away perfectly good food. If you realize you’re too full to eat it after all, can’t you stick it in your bag and eat it as a snack between classes?
  • If it didn’t come from the kitchen, don’t send it back to the kitchen. Somebody put their ice packs on the conveyor belt today which I then had to open, dump the ice out, and throw the bags in recycling and others sent back their Powerade bottles. There are recycling bins everywhere, use one!
  • I love it when you stack your plates and bowls together.. Just not when they all have food left on them. If you’re going to do that make sure the food is all on one plate (the top one!).
  • Put your dishes as close to the mouth of the conveyor belt as possible! The belt only moves when there are dishes on it and if I see it start moving I have to wait for the dishes to reach me.. The wait can get pretty long when people put their dishes on the opposite end.
First day of work!

First day of work!

Hopefully you’ll follow this advice and win my heart!
Bye!

5 Things I Wish I Would’ve Known

Friday, August 30th, 2013
  1. Band-Aides are essential. Walking up and down all the hills is bound to give you blisters unless you plan on wearing tennis shoes every day. Flip flops, sandals, Sperries.. They’ve all given me blisters.
  2. Mail doesn’t come on Saturdays. Just in case you’re waiting for a package, don’t expect to get it on Saturday.
  3. RA’s are cool. The RA on the 7th floor of Slater will literally just come talk to us girls for hours at a time. Lesson? If you’re nice to the RAs, they’re nice back.
  4. The TV cable hookup is by the closet. I’m not sure about the other dorms, but in Slater if you don’t want your TV right next to the closet you should bring an extra long cable to hook it up with.
  5. Shower at weird times. People tend to wake up and shower at times that end in :00, :15, :30, and :45 so if you shower at say, 7:50 or 8:57 you’ll probably find an open shower.
  6. Bonus tip! Bring your student ID everywhere. You literally can’t do anything without it, plus some stores will give you a student discount if you have it.

P.S. check out this funny video of my boyfriend meowing to the song, “Stacy’s Mom.”

When the Bass Drops..

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

Hey!

Friday night I went to my first dubstep concert ever. Now, let me tell you, I’m not one to like that type of music but it just so happens I fell in love with it. The energy and volume was soaring. 5 & a Dime and I think it was King’s Dead were the DJ’s and everybody was given glow necklaces on their way in.

Funniest part of the night? Kim was looking for Renee and me since she had arrived late. There were massively tall people everywhere so some guy literally put me on his shoulders just so Kim would be able to see us. The worst part? She didn’t see me.

Classes started Monday, so far so good. I also orientated at Hillcrest Dining Room for my work study job. Now if Buffalo Wild Wings would ever get back to me!

I need to finish getting ready for class! Chemistry at 8:30 a.m. here I come.. :/

Continuing On Iowa!

Sunday, August 25th, 2013

Hi!

Okay, so a lot has happened since Tuesday. I’ve got updates, pictures, and a very important piece of advice for you!

Tuesday night, Kim, Renee, and a few other 7th floor girls decided to check out Spirit Night at Hillcrest. While we were there we made tie dye shirts and painted picture frames. It was super fun (until the dye on my shirt ran and made it an awkward grayish color. I made it into a workout shirt after that – You’ve got to love Pinterest!) They had the music bumping and cupcakes and bottles of soda to tide us through the night. You guys get to see my shirt, but not my picture frame because I am NOT very artistic!

My first order of business that night was to try sushi for the very first time. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect but I went with a girl I met at orientation and her friends to Formosa. Turns out… I like sushi! Don’t mind me, I’m just becoming a worldly, classy woman over here 🙂 Haha.

Afterwards, I went to see a hypnotist in the IMU with Kim and Renee. All three of us really wanted to be chosen to go onstage and I actually ended up being one of the people who did. Unfortunately, I never ended up getting fully hypnotized because every time I felt myself slip into it, the hypnotist would touch my shoulder and it would bring me out of it. After a few times of that, I made the decision to open my eyes and completely come out of it. He had me go back to my seat in the crowd and it turned out that Kim had gotten hypnotized in the crowd.

Kim thought she was eating an ice cream cone!

It was HILARIOUS. The hypnotist had told them their belly buttons were missing and you could see how mad Kim was getting. She thought he had stolen it so we told her to go up onstage to get it back but she told us “No, he won’t give it back. He has it.”

Following the hypnotist show, we went outside to wait in line to head to Target Takeover. There were so many people trying to get there that we had to wait for the third bus to come around. It was completely insane, but so much fun. They had games you could play to win prizes, guys could shave their heads for a $50 gift card (why wasn’t there something for girls!?), and some pretty amazing deals. It was nearly impossible to move around the store because of the number of people that were there and the check out line stretched halfway around the store. After you checked out, you were given a goody bag FULL of stuff that is really useful to a college student.

Last night, the entire Class of 2017 headed over to Kinnick Stadium for our class picture. We made a giant “I” on the field and wore matching yellow shirts. The energy on the field was so high — It was amazing. Some kids won tours of Kinnick (pink locker room!?) and others won iPads or Kindles. Unfortunately, I did not. Then again, I was expecting it… I’ve never had the greatest luck! Haha. We spent about an hour in the stadium learning the fight song and other important cheers for the games. The cheerleaders put on a special performance for us, so that was pretty cool.

Freshman advice: Do NOT wear your Sperries if you’re going to be doing a lot of walking! Hello, blisters!
