The Cold is Here!

category icon Posted in General

So far, its been a pretty great winter, its barely snowed and the temperature has been pretty reasonable. This week however, is a bit different.  Today I walked to class in -3 Degree temperature with a wind chill of -20!!! I thought I would share some tips that help me get through the cold.

1) Invest in a long coat: My friends back home call them sleeping bag coats, here they’re called parkas.  No matter what they’re called, they are a necessity. The longer the better!!

2) Learn the bus system: At the beginning of the year I never made an effort to learn how to use Bongo (the University of Iowa bus app). But now as I’m trekking to class in the cold, I wish I would have.

3) 2nd Semester, plan classes close together: It is much nicer going from class to class rather than having to come back to my dorm in between. When it’s cold it’s hard to get the motivation to go to class. Having them back to back will help your attendance points.

Bundle up and stay warm!!

Time Flies

category icon Posted in General

It is crazy to believe that I have finished my first semester already!! When talking with my friends about the  semester we all seemed to agree that time flies way too fast in college! With the New Year coming up I decided it would be a good idea to make goals for next semester.

  1. Sleep Comes First! (when it can): I came home with a terrible cold because I was not taking care of myself in college 🙁
  2. Utilize my TA’s: Teacher Assistants are an amazing asset. I started talking to mine in November and realized how helpful they can be however it was a tad to late.
  3. Form Study Groups: College is different than High school in the sense that you might not know a single person in your class, which can be tricky. Just make an effort to talk to new people. It will come in handy if you have questions or want a study group.
  4. Take Nothing for Granted: Time truly does fly so just take in every moment while you I can.

Happy Birthday to Me

category icon Posted in General

This past Thursday I had a blast celebrating my 19th birthday!! My roommate and I started the day off right by getting a bagel at Brueggers for breakfast and followed that with a little bit of window shopping. Unfortunately, my petition for no class on birthdays was overlooked so I had a couple of lectures I had to catch, but then I was able to reward myself with a coffee from Starbucks. The real fun happened at night. For dinner we went got some super yummy sushi at Formosa, and then went off to Union where our sorority had a social with another fraternity. As you can tell I am a big celebrator of birthdays, and I was a little  scared being so far away from home that my birthday would get overlooked but that was not the case. Everyone here was so kind and giving that I had a wonderful time… still cant believe I’m already 19!

Happy Fall Y’all

category icon Posted in General

Although the weather has been a little tricky lately, going between hot and cold, I think mother nature has finally declared it fall! It’s funny how different the campus looks with the many colors of fall, and I don’t know about anyone else but it’s a struggle to resist jumping into the piles of leaves (yes I know I’m such a freshman). This time of year is so bitter sweet because the weather is so perfect, but I know it wont be long until I’m trekking to class in snow boots. For now though I’m just going to drink my Starbucks pumpkin spice latte and enjoy the present.

As always,

Go Greek!

category icon Posted in General

pi phiAfter the excitement of finally being at college wore off  I started to realize how much I missed my friends and Family back home. Thankfully right as these symptoms of homesickness started coming on, it was the start of Fall Formal Recruitment (the process for going Greek). Through this process you go around in traveling groups with 40 girls and visit all of the sorority houses on campus, and through mutual selection, find out which sorority you fit in. For me, that was Pi Beta Phi! This process was so amazing. Not only did I gain 120 “sisters” but our hall in Burge became especially close too; girls who were once strangers are now great friends because we all have something in common, our love for Greek! Below I posted a picture from “Bid Day,” the day I found out I was a Pi Phi (aka the best day ever).

can someone just pinch me

category icon Posted in General

It all seems so unreal; A week ago I was  at home in Atlanta in a big room all by myself, getting to see my friends and family everyday and now I’m in Iowa City living with two strangers!!!! This all kinda feels like one really longgggg dream that I’m just going to wake up from.  The first day of class was today which was kinda awesome. Unlike high school, you only have to go to the classes you need. So today I went to my 3 classes and by 10:30 am I was free to do whatever I want. On another positive note everyone here has been so helpful. When I came here, I knew no one but now I have a ton of new friends thanks to my awesome roommates/floor-mates.  As of right now everything is pretty great but ‘knock on wood’ because it is only the first day.

Until next time,
