About Maya

Hello! I wanted to start my autobiography in a different way than usual… something that stands out… and maybe this is it… but I’ve never blogged before, so I’m new to this! With that being said, this will be—at least from my perspective— just a basic bio for you to get to know me better 🙂

My name is Maya. Okay, cool.

I was born in Duluth, Minnesota but moved to Jefferson City, Missouri just three months after that. I’ve been a Missouri girl ever since. For those of you who don’t know, Jefferson City is the Capital of Missouri.

I am an open major and stressed. Everyone always tells me “you have plenty of time, most people say they know what they want to do, but end up switching.” and “you’ll figure it out” and so on. I get it, they’re trying to help me feel better about it, but it doesn’t. I just nod my head and smile. Honestly, I won’t feel better about it until I do know. With no hesitations. One of those confident, “this is what I want to do” feeling.. Fingers crossed I’ll figure that out before I’m a junior.

Why Iowa? The ‘million dollar’ question. I get this a lot.

As a senior in high school, you get a spam of emails from universities all over the country. I got one from Iowa, did some research, scheduled a visit in July of 2018, loved it, came back in October, and on October 13, 2018, I knew I’d be on campus the following year. You choose a place where you can envision yourself. They always say “it felt like home,” and yeah, that’s the feeling I got. That’s the feeling you WANT. Why would you want to spend 3-4 years at a place that doesn’t give you that feeling? It’s also a good distance from home. For me, two hours would’ve been ideal, but I can live with driving four if it means I get to see my two dogs and sleep in my own bed when I get home.

Now for some fun facts:

  • I was named after Maya Angelou and met her when I was six.
  • I’ve been to two Jonas Brothers’ concerts, and will be attending one in September (where my JoBro fans at??).
  • Ice cream is my dessert preference, specifically Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. I do love a good soft serve cone, though.
  • I donated 12in of my hair to ‘Pantene Beautiful Lengths’ the summer of 2018.
  • I’ve played soccer my whole life and love it. Always will.
  • Skittles ‘Wild Berry + Tropical’ is my favorite candy.
  • Writing is therapeutic to me.
  • I plan on rushing! I’m super excited for it. My mom was in a sorority and her sorority sister remains her best I want that.
  • I can’t wait to “wave” at the kids at football games (will probably cry each time).
  • I’m pumped to be an official Hawkeye!
