Lecture Hall/Burge Lunch

First I want to welcome everybody to my official University of Iowa blog page.  At this point I have no idea if anyone will read this, but if you do I will try to be as honest as I can about the University of Iowa, good and bad, and hopefully give you a better insight on how the University operates and my personal experiences as a first-year transfer student.

So today was my first day in a big lecture hall.  I would say there were about 250 students in the class.  I wasn’t sure what to expect.  When I walked in the professor was playing music from the ’80s.  In my opinion that’s always a good sign.  When the class started, she lowered one of the largest screens I have ever seen.  I know after a few times that it won’t be as interesting, but today it was pretty cool.So we went through and talked about some key topics of the class.  We were also introduced to our TAs.  I’ve never had a TA before so I will let you know how that goes on Friday after our discussion class.  All in all I didn’t mind having such a large class.  The professor didn’t make it feel like it was a class of over 250 students.  I mean obviously she probably won’t know my name by the end of the semester.  I enjoyed it and I think it will make me work really hard.  Who knows, maybe the professors remember people who are doing well in the class.

So after my lecture I headed to Burge for lunch for the first time today.  Since I live so far from central campus, I don’t normally eat in Burge or Hillcrest.  I ended up getting there around 11:30.  When I get there the line to get in was pretty long, but the cashiers moved pretty quickly, just have your Hawk ID ready.  Also I suggest bringing a backpack especially for the lunch portion of the day because trying to balance books and a tray of food can end up looking like a balancing act, I know this from experience.  One other thing, before going to the food area look at the map of all your choices and where they are located.  College students are hungry and you need to grab your food quickly and find a seat.  There are plenty of options to choose from, and the food I had today was very good.  It’s not high school food, I promise.  This is edible.
