Recently, over the weekend, I decided to see some of my friends at the Walk It Out show at the IMU. I wanted to experience the culture on our campus, and the activities that my fellow students from other cultures. I visited the show with one of my friends, Yash, and my girlfriend, Athena. Yash is from India, and Athena is a first-generation Filipino immigrant. Experiencing this with some multicultural friends was a part of learning about other cultures. It is nice to see how different the world’s perspectives can be, and it’s beautiful to see how we can all be united as one across campus.
We arrived at the show around 30 minutes late and stood towards the back of the venue. These were the only open spots, because the IMU was so packed with people ready to celebrate the dancers and the music around them. First, we saw the Latin dances, with their flowy dresses and colorful attire. It was definitely something you could clap and dance along to with them.
Within the LGBTQ+ Section of the dance, where I saw my friend Kylen participate in many of the dances, Athena’s friend Haven also participated in these dances. The dances were much more modern and up for interpretation to the audience. Many of the songs were something that you might listen to in a club or at a party, allowing for a much more upbeat and dancing atmosphere.
There was an African section of dancers, but none of our friends were participating in this section; two of our friends were participating after the intermission. Our friend Ivane and our friend Yogi were participating in the Asian sections of the show, and it was a blast to see all of our friends in something that highlighted who they were culturally. The diversity was so beautiful to experience, and you could tell that they worked so hard on the show.
This campus is so unique and beautiful, with great people within it.
