Garba

...we matched! 😀

I am currently on an amazing South Indian Fusion Bollywood Dance team called Iowa Andhi!

Andhi translates from Hindi to English as Storm.

After one of our practices, our coach encouraged us to attend the Garba, hosted by University of Iowa’s Indian Student Association.

I also received an invitation in my email. Sooo… me and a couple of friends decided to attend!

We had an Amazing Amazing Time!

"The Final Group"
After we all broke a sweat from dancing....

There was plenty of great Indian Music! 🙂

We finally got it!

I tried some Indian Food! 😀

Yum Yum ...Mango Lassi and Samosa
The ladies who went with me!

Did I mention it was a lot of fun?

-Im being theatrical...don't ask 🙂
Just having a good time

It took place in Currier Residential Hall in the MPR room. There was a teaching session(if you wanted to learn how to do the dance ahead of time) an hour and half before Garba actually started. Garba started at 10 and went until 1 in the morning!

We even saw some more of our friends there.

What is Garba?  Garba is a form of traditional Indian folk dance from India’s western state of Gujarat, conducted with dandiya sticks. This high-energy dance is traditionally celebrated at the end of the Navratri festival.  Garba is a great opportunity to actively engage in Indian culture and meet other people with similar interests.

Check out this video clip from the movie Pride and Prejudice. This clip is an example of Garba, and dancing with Dandiyas sticks, which is something we also learned how to do!

Bible Study

I got invited to go to one of the many bible studies that occur on campus. The one I went to was at the Afro House ttp://imu.uiowa.edu/afro-american-cultural-center-2

Here is a previous recording of the Afro House. This recording took place during the open house! [youtubewd]OWG-xEDWqPs[/youtubewd]

I had a great time and met a bunch of people! Great way to interact!

When I was preparing to come to the University of Iowa, because of all the support that my church community was showing, I began to wonder where am I going to continue to learn more about Jesus? After a little bit of research I found many different options for different religions. I am christian and I actively take part in a bible study that I found to best fits my faith needs and schedule restrictions.

One less worry-Thanks U Of I

No Need To Be Afraid of the Boat!

I Live in Mayflower, and I have noticed a lot of misconceptions about the magnificent residence hall, even on campus.
Person: Where do you live?
Kyra: Mayflower
Person: All the way out there? That Sucks!
Kyra: Actually, no-not really.

I love Mayflower, besides being kind of out of the way and rare evening buses, the perks definitely outweigh those two “negatives”.

As mentioned above, I share a bathroom (toilet and shower) with only three other girls that I get to know very well-not a bunch of strangers. Late at night when I crave yummy baked goods- I can definitely get up and make some toll house cookies! On top of all that, Mayflower is huge. So many opportunities to meet a lot of really cool people!

Hooray For Mayflower!
p.s.
I hear the other dorms are great too! 🙂

♪ ♫Its a quarter after 4 and Im Doing Spanish♪ ♫

I had poor time management going on today. So this is how I am paying for it… it is definitely four-something in the morning and I am studying for a Spanish Quiz for tomorrow. I studied once earlier today but didn’t have the materials to take notes- so here I am!

On top of that, my first class is at 8:30 tomorrow morning. 🙁

Just Ask Your Self-LETS GETIT HAWKS!!!

Alright so everybody knows that the Hawkeyes are AMAZING! So it shouldn’t come to any body’s surprise that I can’t sleep because I am so excited to experience my first live Hawk Game! Why am I so pumped, especially because I’ve never watched an entire Hawkeye football game in my life? Well, it’s kind of one of those situations/emotions that are “comprehension based on experience” type of things.

But … I will try and give it a whirl.

So you get your acceptance letter talking a bunch of stuff about being a Hawk and you’re like, “okay cool.”

Then you start getting all this cool mail, that is saying stuff like Dear Fellow Hawkeye or Go Hawks, and it makes you start to wonder.

So you ask yourself, “Self?” and then your self says

“Yes?”

“What in the James’ Giant Peach does it mean to be a Hawk?”

So then you’re all confused and excited at the same time, once orientation comes rolling around. You meet new people, learn about a bunch of activities that you can’t wait to join, and you get overwhelmed by the size of the campus. Aside from all that, people are talking all kinds of slang that you can’t wrap your head around. Instead of using the expression “that’s great!” people are saying “Go Hawks!” People are passing by you enunciating all kinds of acronyms and unfamiliar terms; such as IMU, Cambus, ITS, ISIS, U Bill, etc. What’s next? You notice all these good looking people stuntin’ around in their Gold and Black! And then it HITS you like a ton of bricks! Wow, all these Hot Bods in their Gold n Black speaking their own Language are all students/faculty of the University of Iowa.

**This is the part where you really get excited**

So when football season comes along, everyone really unites. Everyone on campus is really excited about one thing.

Well, I give up… I can’t explain it to you. Maybe I will try again next week! Its just really awesome!

GO HAWKS!

Studywhere?

Have you ever heard that before? Well, if you want to do well in college and actually know the material, it may be a good idea to follow this rule. I have my books and my computer, all I need is a place to study.

As I look around campus, it seems that I am not the only one who has an assignment or two.
